Sala2: Ti aspetto fuori.

"Ti aspetto fuori."

The idea for this new artists’ book, which is currently work in progress, originates from the special encounter between the technical research and the confluence of two artists’ – Kaori Miyayama’s and Daniela Lorenzi’s – personal development and experiences.
The thematic being developed here is that of ‘boundaries’, theme already present and explored in the work of both artists.

Starting with a careful consideration of the differences and potential similarities assigned to the meaning and subtext of the word ‘boundary/ies’ in the western and oriental cultures respectively, the project sets out to undertake a mutual in-depth examination and enquiry into this theme, causing the artists’ book to become an authentic space for exchange, evaluation, comparison and contrast.

Boundaries – to be respected or to be crossed? The boundary – a line of demarcation, one that sharply divides, or a doorstep that allows a glimpse of what is on the other side, or perhaps as a true and unquestionable space between here and there, a ground where contamination is possible and is even allowed? Convergence and divergence in a continuous interplay of duality. Blending in may seemingly entail surrendering one’s personal identity, only to embrace it again in a few unique details, in one’s own personal symbolism and in one’s own unique narrative and experience.

The structure of the artists’ book (the way the book has been bound) allows a cross- and dual-reading of the pages. Within the book’s structure the two artists’ distinct personal identities emerge from the beginning of their work at the two opposite sides of the book, and as the pages develop they are able to transform the storytelling through a separate and continuous interaction. The result is a narrative which is unequivocal and ambiguous at the same time. Who is who and which is which?....only through careful reading of the clues left here and there on the pages we are able to recognize and retrieve the authenticity of the gesture, the image or the word.

A mix of digital media and experiments related to traditional processes are being deployed in the production of the Artists’ Book. The images are conceived from original pictures or from the manipulation of the digital file (for the gum print matrices), or printed directly from a digital source ("Giclée" prints) with mineral inks on 100% cotton paper. The use of monotype typography for words and relief embossing for some further types of interventions amplifies the willingness to dilute, blend or leave behind the conventional boundaries of fine print making.
